Tika-Taka vs Total Football?

Spain take on Holland in tonights world cup final in what should be a classic of final, somehow I doubt that will be the case. Spains style is often described as “Tika Taka” football, the obsession of passing the opponent to death, the abilty to make 40+ passes and walk the ball into the net. With players like Xavi and Iniesta pulling the strings in midfield, this style of football is a joy to watch yet can be frustrating when the world is shouting “SHOOT!..” after the 25th pass and the striker is 10 ten yards out.

I fear this style of football is not suited to Fernando Torres, he likes to use his pace and power and run directly at defenders before the beating the keeper. His goal to that clinched Euro 2008 is a perfect example of Torres at his best, it wouldnt surprise me if Pedro keeps his place in the team tonight and Torres will be a impact sub.If the tika-taka style hasnt worked then bring Torres on and lump it forward and watch him go!

Many people have critised Hollands style recently, claiming they are betraying their total football roots by playing a more disiplined and defensive style – which is absolute rubbish. Holland havent actually been playing “Total Football” since 1988 when the likes of Gullit and Van Basten donned the orjane jersey. Under boss Bert Van Marwijk the dutch play a more pragmatic style of football with belief and confidence, they never looked like getting out of first gear in most games doing just enough to win the group games.

They play to their strengths and even after going 1-0 down to Brazil the players still belived they could get a result, this is down to the coachs astute tactics and man management skills. The midfield general Van Bommel will break play up and with Snejider and Robben the creative forces in midfield the dutch will always create chances, the one player I would like to see play a part would be Eljero Elia – this kid will be star for the dutch over the next 10 years. Elia is technically very good and has blistering pace to boot, who could make a telling impact coming off the bench tonight.

I hope its a classic, but I suspect Spain will edge 1-0.
