Can Man City claim top spot in the Premier League? They face an Everton side, who are win less in 7 and are dangerously close to the relegation zone. Should City win tonight, they would sit top of the Premier League at Christmas. This stat is not quite as relevant as being bottom at Christmas, but it could be a big advantage for Roberto Mancini’s men.
Such is the inconsistency of the Premier League this season, Man City could well find themselves at the summit despite being a team in “crisis”. Tevez wants out, he has been stripped of the captaincy, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him play and score the winner tonight. Pantomime season is well and truly here, the sackings of Hughton and Allardyce confirm that the Premier League is bonkers place to be right now.
The game tonight will be tough for Man City, they have an appalling recent record against Everton, and David Moyes will be desperate to carry on that trend. Everton these days are a shadow of the team, that finished 4th, 5th and 6th in previous seasons. The goals have dried up and Jermaine Beckford doesn’t look up to Premier League standard, so its difficult to see how Everton will cope with a City team in great form, despite their off field, tabloid grabbing headlines.
It won’t be a goal fest tonight, City have been very goal shy at home in the league. They have scored 8 goals in 8 games at Eastlands this season, hard to believe they could be sitting top at Christmas. Just another stat which beggars belief in a Premier League season which has seen more ups and downs than Carlo Ancelotti’s eyebrow. City shouldn’t need any more motivation to beat a poor Everton side, if being top of the league doesn’t inspire these players to get a result then they should pack up and go home.
In a weekend that saw Manchester United’s manager, Alex Ferguson, become the clubs longest-serving manager – over taking Sir Matt Busby. It could be his City neighbours that celebrate Christmas by being top of the league, advantage City?
