Viktoria Plzeň finally confirmed what they have threatening to do for ages, and win the Gambrinus Liga. Although for a brief moment, Ostrava gave the home side a bit of a scare after taking an early lead. I went to Plzeň yesterday to witness the title celebrations, it was the first time I have seen Plzeň play live and they didn’t disappoint.
Despite having the pace of a OAP, Pavel Horvath’s intelligence and vision is what sets him apart from the rest of the league. Not to mention his ability to smash home a free kick. I was also really impressed with Petr Jirácek, the Plzeň number 20 scored one and set one up in yesterdays game, and was involved in a lot of Plzeň’s good work.
The 7,000 or fans were packed tight into the ground, the fans were already singing “champions, champions” before kickoff, they were confident of beating of Ostrava, and rightly so. Plzeň are deserved champions as they play vibrant and attacking football. Something which Pavel Vrba must take alot of credit for, had Sparta Prague ground down Plzeň’s and wrestled the title from them it would have a been a travesty to the game of football.
Most teams which celebrate their 100th year, bring out a commemorative mug or revamp the club the badge. Not Plzeň, they win their maiden league title. Not a bad way to celebrate your 100th birthday?
